Maurice was recognized for his skills and quickly moved up in rank becoming A most outstanding and successful general in the Byzantine military. He went on to marry the daughter of Tiberius and after the death of his father-in-law he was named the new emperor in 582 AD

Maurice was also the last member of the Justinian dynasty.
